ROMEO AND JULIET

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy play written by William Shakespeare between 1591 and 1595. We are analyzed some films to compare them with the original play.

GNOMEO AND JULIET

Gnomeo and Juliet is an animation film based on the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
The film is a comedy very similar with the original book.

It starts with a narrator in a theatre who is saying that this story has been telling so many times. The characters instead of humans are garden gnomes in two different gardens. The gnomes for one garden are confronting with the gnomes for the other garden. It is curious that the landlord and the landlady are confronting too.

The story of the film and the one in the play is almost equal; the character's name, the important scenes or the confrontings . It is important to take into account that the film is for children, so it has a lot of comedy scenes and the confrontations are gentler.
As happens in the play, Gnomeo challenges Teobaldo with a race, at the end of the race Teobaldo died. Gnomeo is challenging again and at this time is Gnomeo who seems diying, but he is lost. Everybody believes that he is dead so the Gnomeo's family make a plan to invade the enemy garden. In the middle of the battle, Gnomeo appears to rescue Juliet. Almost at the end, it seems that the two lovers are dead, but after a few second of suspense, they are alive. Here there is the big difference with the play. Finally, the two families resolve their problems and Gnomeo and Juliet are happily togheter.

This scene is when Gnomeo gets lost. He is in a big park with a statue of William Shakespeare. If you know the real play it is funny to listen because Gnomeo tells his story and Shakespeare associates it with his play. This scene is great because children can know about the real author.

LETTERS TO JULIET

Letters to Juliet is a 2010 American romantic drama film. The film was released theatrically in North Amercia and other countries on May 14, 2010. The idea for the film was inspired by the 2006 non-fiction book, Letters to Juliet, by Lise Friedman and Ceil Friedman, which chronicles the phenomenon of letter writing to Shakespeare's most famous romantic heroine.

This part of the film shows the ending balcony scene in which Romeo declares his love of her.The speech between Romeo and Juliet is totally different from what is reflected in this scene. Romeo and Juliet were separated by their families, in this case they are separated by their commitment to others. Even so a relationship is established between the real scene in Romeo and Juliet and this scene because in both Romeo declares his unconditional love for Juliet, even if it means death, or in this case the fall from a balcony.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE

Shakespeare in Love is a 1998 film about the story of Romeo and Juliet originaly written by William Shakespeare. It is a romantic comedy-drama film which depicts a love affair involving playwright William Shakespeare at the time he was writting the play Romeo and Juliet.

In the film, Shakespeare falls in love with Viola and this love story inspires him to write the play. As the same as the original play, there is a sad ending because the lovers are not able to be together, but  in the film they do not dye as in the Shakespeare's work.

Viola pretends to be a man in order to participate in the play and this is the moment in which they fall in
love. It is a secret that is discovered at the end of the film.

In this scene we can see the play performance in which Viola is Romeo and they have begun to fall in love, it can be see how this love inspires Shakespeare to continue writting the story.

ROMEO+JULIET

Romeo + Juliet is a 1996 romantic-drama film adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The film is an abridged modernization of Shakespeare's play. While it retains the original Shakespearean dialogue, the Montagues and the Capulets are represented as warring business empires and swords are replaced by guns. Some of the names were also changed, Lord and Lady Montague and Lord and Lady Capulet were given first names, as opposed to the Shakespeare original where their first names are never mentioned. Friar Lawrence became Father Lawrence, and Prince Escalus was renamed Captain Prince. There was also no Friar John, who was in the original play. Additionally, a few plot details were shifted; most notably, Juliet awakens just as Romeo poisons himself and the two see each other alive before he dies and she commits suicide.

This scene shows a short clip of Romeo and Juliet meeting for the first time in the Capulet´s party.

HAMLET

This is one of the most famous dramatic plays of Shakespeare. It was written between 1600 and 1608. We have explained the different influences that this play had had  through the time in the following pages.

THE SIMPSONS - HAMLET

This fragment of The Simpsons is based on the famous work of Shakespeare Hamlet, written between 1599 and 1601.

The  Shakespeare original play has as the main theme the revenge of the prince hamlet after the murder of his father, the king of Denmark, by his brother Claudio. Other themes of the play are the incest, the madness and the betrayal.

The Simpsons in this chapter make a summary of the play in a comical way, but they do not lose the essence. As in the original play, Hamlet look for his revenge and he gets it, but the history end with all the characters in the play died. In the Simpsons fragment change some names of the characters, and the last scene (which in the original play is the most dramatic scene) represent the dies of Laertes and Hamlet but in a very comic way.

     See from minute 15:05

In this fragment appears an important element in the play: Hamlet (in this case Bart) want a theatre company to represents the murderer of his father to discover that Claudio is the murderer of his father.
